The Weekend Edit

It’s been a rather intense week for weather. There is snow on the ground, the sky is blue, and the sun is shining. Those three things rarely happen in Texas at the same time. This cozy vibe is courtesy of a winter storm that came over the Rocky Mountains this week and caused havoc in several northern states. Los Angeles continues to burn with wildfires that began three days ago, fueled by high winds and dry conditions.

This is what I have been doing to keep myself from doomscrolling. (I’ve also linked a few trusted resources below if you are looking to support those who lost everything in the LA fires.)

Reading

I started reading The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V.E. Schwab (bookshop.org affiliate link*) in early December but paused because I couldn’t focus on reading even though I wanted to read it. I’m glad I didn’t DNF this one. The questions the character and story bring up are interesting to think about.

Watching

I’m watching the first season of High Potential (imdb link) on Disney+/Hulu.

In the same way the Office is an American remake of the same show on BBC; High Potential is an American remake of the French show – HPI Haut Potentiel Intellectuel.

It’s an episodic crime procedural that I would say was similar to Monk, Lucifer, and perhaps even Pysch.

Listening

I’ve been listening to Paris Paloma’s newest album – Cacophony (Spotify Link)

And my favorite song from this week’s Discover Weekly is Sixteen Ton by Geoff Castellucci (Spotify Link)

And that my loves is that.

The Weekend Edit

We did it! Welcome to the New Year. Are you off to running start?

I am sort of…I ended the year with cleaning out the studio to do a complete overhaul. I still have some things to take down off of the walls in order to start working on a much-needed storage solution for all the things I actually do in the studio. I even talked to some lovely people at the Container Store Custom Design Studio this week to get a better idea what the studio will potentially look like given the some of their recommendations.

With the decision to give the studio a proper re-do it also got me thinking about other aspects that I wanted to become more intentional with. I didn’t write as much as I wanted to. Towards the end of 2024 it dawned on me that I actually felt a desire to write fiction again. It’s not a strong desire but it’s there, nonetheless.

If you saw the previous “aside post” I recently posted, then you know that I have been reading a lot of books. While I have a book category, I haven’t exactly been writing things for it in the last year since I redesigned the website. This is something I would like to focus on this year. I also want to write more on the blog in general. Don’t get me wrong, I love sharing my pen and ink adventures when I have them, but I haven’t had a lot to say in the last few months.

So, I am taking inspiration from several sources and starting a once weekly series – The Weekend Edit – where, for the moment, I’ll share what I am watching, listening to and reading. Eventually you’ll find curated recommendations as well.

Let’s jump in shall we?

Reading
Book cover of The Dragon of Ynys by Minerva Cerridwen

The Dragon of Ynys by Minerva Cerridwen (bookshop.org affiliate link*) is the current book I am reading. I chose this book to fulfill one of the ten books for the Reading Around the World 2025 book challenge being run by The StoryGraph. RAtW is meant to encourage readers to broaden their literary horizons.

It’s a delightful fairytale, one that I could have finished in a day or two, however I am also participating in the January Pages Challenge also being run by The StoryGraph and have limited my reading time to five minutes to remind myself to log my progress. The challenge is meant to encourage reading habits by reading and logging one page per day. While I do not necessarily need to be encouraged to read most books this habit will help me get through some of the books I’ve had to put aside for various reasons and that I do not want to DNF (did not finish).

Playing

I started playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard (Steam Store Link) on New Years Day and have about eighteen hours logged on Steam. I tend to play the majority of rpg games in “story mode” when available for a first play through so that I am able to pay attention to the story and enjoy the experience. A second playthrough will usually occur at whatever is considered normal unless I don’t find any replay value in it. At the moment I’m quite enjoying DA:tVG

Listening

Honestly, I haven’t actually listened to much in the last week music or otherwise although I did catch the most recent release from the musical Epic – The Ithaca Saga (Spotify link) so there is that. Epic is a musical adaptation loosely based on the Odyssey being produced by Jorge Miguel Rivera-Herrans.

And that my loves is that.
